Exploring Nature near Fort Lauderdale

Between the beaches, Intracoastal Waterway, and the nearby Everglades, Fort Lauderdale is home to several natural wonders. One of the easy ways you can discover nature that is unique to South Florida is at the Anne Kolb Nature Center. The nature center itself sits on 1,500-acres of grounds that consist of a coastal mangrove wetland. A mangrove is a tree or shrub that grows in tropical swamp areas. While many species of mangroves exist, a mangrove forest is a unique part of South Florida. 

In addition to seeing the mangrove forest, you can check out the 3,500-gallon saltwater aquarium. The aquarium is located in the main exhibit hall; admission costs $2 per person. You can also climb the observation tower to get a good view of the Atlantic Ocean, the Intracoastal Waterway, and the mangroves. 

You can hike four different trails throughout the park: Lake Trail, Fishing Pier Trail, Mud Flat Trail, and South Trail. All but South Trail are under a mile long; each one is easy to moderate. Many people bring their bicycles in their van rentals to enjoy the trails.
