The famous Stranahan House was built in 1901 by contractor Edwin T. King when Fran Stranahan and his wife, Ivy Cromartie Stranahan, arrived in the area. Stranahan receives credit for being the town’s founding father, while his wife was the area’s first school teacher. Their home had many purposes, including operating as the town’s trading post, post office, community center, and town hall. Today, the house is well-preserved and is open to public tours seven days a week.
As we mentioned above, Edwin T. King built the Stranahan House before finally finishing his own family home in 1907. As a farmer from Georgia, King came from a wealthy family. However, the frost of 1894 destroyed his citrus crop, and King packed up his family to move south. On his way to Miami, King found Fort Lauderdale, a town of just 20 people. He went on to build the town’s school, courthouse, and many other buildings around the town. Today, the King-Cromartie House remains on display to the public and is said to be haunted by Louise King Cromartie, who passed in the house from yellow fever.
Just west of the Intercoastal Waterway lies the burial mound for what’s believed to be more than 100 Tequesta Indians. The 1,000-year-old mound sits on a quiet oasis and is about 16-feet high. This ancient Indian burial mound is the only one in the area. Tequesta Indians cared deeply for their dead, letting bodies decompose and cleaning the bones before burial. The park is a quiet and somber area to visit, but well worth the trip.
